The story of the Marlenka cakes is closely linked to the story of the founder of the company Gevorg Avetisjan, who came to Frýdek-Místek at the turn of the century. He ran from Armenia to escape war and political instability.

For a foreigner seeking refuge, the beginnings in the new country were not easy. In one of the difficult moments, he had asked his sister if she could bake something sweet to cheer him up. She had made a honey cake – based on a recipe handed down in the family.

Gevorg shared the cake with his friend who ran a café and was surprised to receive a phone call on the same day that they needed another cake, and actually many more. Thanks to its exceptional combining the light fluffy texture of and delicious caramel crème the family recipe soon received many compliments. In honour of his mother and daughter, Gevorg named the cake Marlenka.

In 2003 Gevorg Avetisjan and his sister Hasmik founded a Czech company producing honey cakes based on an old Armenian recipe.
